Hurricane Sandy Aftermath Analysis

The album with full size pictures is here (https://picasaweb.google.com/117579214675083620364/HurricaneSandyCompilation) These were not taken by me. Some were taken by family  the rest snagged on internet on forums and news sites. Collected for historical reasons and for lessons learned on disaster preparedness (or lack there of) by individuals, businesses and government entities.

The only guaranteed way to have news update and comms is to become a HAM. Get the license, get some gear, learn how to use it. Learn how to build electronics and antennas from scratch. You just may have to.

Have a way to call for help. Have 3 ways because the other 2 will fail.

People turn into mindless zombie lemmings when confronted with overwhelming situations. Don't be one of them. Have a plan, be prepared.

Last second trip to pickup some ... bread.... Hope you have food and MREs back home.

Snorkeling to find keys in Brooklyn.

If evacuating remember to lock up. Shoppers may roll through. If staying behind to weather the storm be prepared for predators.

Red Cross shelter.

A tall ship was lost. Some lives lost as well.

Train carrying chemicals caught fire in Georgia. Not sure what was on board but it wasn't anything TOO terrible.

With proper preparation this was a non-event for many.

The time to visit home depot was days before the storm. The time to fix that leaky roof was as soon as you found out that the repair was needed.

As bad as the situation is we have been on this planet for millions of years. Much of the reason this storm was so bad are man made. We congregate and crowd our selves in areas where there are extreme conditions, we live too close to coasts, we crowd our selves in tight spaces, we dig deep underground next to (and under) rivers.

Remember this isn't forever. Things will improve and get better.

Ammo is important for dealing with natures nasty little surprises - degenerate criminals.

Have a backup for a backup for a backup. Even if the smartphone battery isn't dead many cellphone towers failed very quickly.

Are you prepared for a medical emergency? With roads closed, trees and power lines down you may be the victims best hope for survival.

Just a little reminder - when power goes out the traffic lights don't work. Now is not the time to drive like an asshole. Drive with extreme vigilance. Afriends family was hit when a van tboned them going through intersection. I saw many cars rolling stop signs, not having any lights on in a rain storm, at night.

Gas mask needed for cleanup in DC.

Preparedness supplies.

Impact of storm on internet nodes.

Gas line.

No looters in our neighbor but not everyone was so lucky.

Portable weather station. The CCAR could have used a setup like this at deployed sites and shelters.

You know, just in case.

Gas stations out of gas.

Would have been a good idea for many people impacted.

Obstruction on nj transit tracks.

The plate is BOOMER2 for those of you that know the reference.

Even the space shuttle wasn't spared.

How much do you want to bet they had HUGE gorgeous windows and got a GREAT deal on them and their installation?

Apple is SO going to sue them for infringing on their maps patent.

NOT a wise move.

People commuting without cars, buses or subways.

People being neighborly in NYC. Looks like the same genny as mine.

Their car got washed away when they tried to cross a normally tiny creek. Lesson learned.

Super tanker parking itself onshore.

Tell me all about how your bugout and DR plans involve your vehicle.

After the flood comes the fire.

Sand Trap.

It was cool of chase to let people use it as a charging center.

You know how all those training and signs advise that flood water is deeper than it appears and to not drive over it? I think this is why.

The SS agents are keeping an eye out while the empty suit visits nj.

There's something you don't see very often - NYC dark.

Its crazy because I was just at the battery park station last week.

This is more of a fire hazard than a BBQ.

The FDNY don't want you to have fun or to be warm.

Snow in West Virginia!

I only see 1 person in this picture who planned ahead.

All these years and Civil Air Patrol still stayed with woodland uniforms. Wonder why they didn't follow Air Force with transition.

I recently heard that post 1991 cars had some kind of ani-siphoning mechanism that prevents a hose from reaching the gas tank. I don't believe that to be true and a proper transfer hose should still be able to reach the gas tank. No need to puncture the gas tank.

This right here is my #1 motivation for having a canoe or zodiac.

It sort of looks like they are moving it from 1 truck to another. Not sure if the truck they are moving to is smaller or more rugged for delivering water to impacted area.
